Where Nursing Education Transpire

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

It was just a month back when I
was literally quarantined to stay
away from crowd, school, public.

Viral conjunctivitis is commonly known
as red eyes or sore eyes.

Sore Eye JY Halloween

This is me with conjunctivitis.
It sure is stinging pain!

And it can be spread by contact of fluids.

Eg. You touch your eyes that is infected
with viral conjunctivitis, and your friend
touches yours. Very likelihood that he/she
may be down with viral conjunctivitis.

What I am going to share with you, I got
it from a very kind doctor that gave me
some information on viral conjunctivitis and
I want to share with you here:

1. Consult your doctor is you have any symptoms
of conjunctivitis. He/She will make the diagnosis and rule
out more serious conditions.

Symptoms of viral conjunctivitis include:

- Tearing of one or both eyes
- Redness of one or both eyes
- Itchiness of one or both eyes
- Often have symptoms pf an upper respiratory
infection or cold (runny or blocked nose)
- Burning, itchy eyes with a heavy, sticky mucus discharge
may indicate bacterial conjunctivitis

2. Antibiotics DO NOT kill viruses. However
antibiotic eyedrops may help clear bacteria,
and prevent secondary bacterial infection of
a viral conjunctivitis.

3. DO NOT share towels, pillows or utensils

4. WASH YOUR HANDS THOROUGHLY, particularly after
washing your eyes.

5. Use tissues and dispose them afterwards.

6. DO NOT let anyone use your eyedrops or eye
medication. Throw them away when your treatment is finished.

7. DO NOT wear contact lens until symptoms have completely
gone, and for 24 hours after the last dose of any eyedrop or
ointment.

8. TRANSMITTED BY NASAL DROPLETS. Avoid crowds and
stay in your room as far as possible to avoid further transmission.

9. Check with your doctor again if your vision becomes affected,
if there is any eye pain, and symptoms do not settle after 2-3 days
of treatment.

Plus personal tips, use warm or cold compress if your feel
the burning sensation in your eyes, it helps.

Take it as a mini “hibernation” time out, because I felt that
sleeping helps for me.

Hope that you have learn something today =)

Take care!

Hi Life Savers =)

I recieved this email a few months back
and was told that if i pass it on to
10 persons, at least 1 life will be saved.

Well it smells like s.p.am when you
forward chain email.

So i thought..why not post it here!

Here you go…

[Credit to whoever who started sending this PDF]

Basically there is a story to it
but the gist of it is this:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE
T *Ask the person to TALK; To speak a simple sentence
R *Ask the individual to RAISE BOTH ARMS

Another sign is to stick out their
tongue, if it is crooked, it is an indication.

If in doubt, always call for emergency response
team. Your local ambulance hotline.

In Singapore: 995

That’s all folks, hope you have benefited from
this sharing.

Cheers!

Palliative Care

Good Day Folks =)

I was driving home when I
hear this quick piece of news on
the radio.

It was along the line of, “Focusing
on palliative care….”

The gist of it is this, in palliative care,
we are not looking at curing the disease but
instead to alleviate the pain.

And to work with the patient, family to fulfill
their last wishes.

Hmm..food for thought.

Talk to you soon!

Foresight Is Right =)

Hi Nurses

Haha..I think I have got a
good foresight =)

Awhile ago, I did share my thoughts with
a few buddies that a first aid requirements
should be in place for the public.

Not only the health care professionals.

Check out this article =)

CPR

If you are not already in the healthcare team
or you chanced upon this post and
you are insterested in saving lives…

Then I would urge you to learn this vital
skill!

CPR = Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

Cardio refers to the heart. [The chest compressions]
Pulmonary refers to your lungs. [Kiss of life!]

That’s all folks for now!

Cheers! =)

Health Care Law & Ethics

Hi Folks

The first lecture that I had at NUS
was health care law and ethics.

I am pretty much going to put up
a mindmap on the first lecture and
the readings. It is not up yet.

So before the mindmap is up for you,
like the module title says it…

It is about healthcare LAW and ETHICS.

To put it simply:

Law VS Ethics

Law is rigid whereas ethics is based on
moral and the individual.

I will be back with the mindmap as soon
as the lecturer put up the reading pages etc.

Till then, have fun!

Hi Nurses! =)

I know you are busy and all,
AND what you need is a good break!

Below is a mini compilation of movies
to recharge your souls again =)

Enjoy!

1. Coach Carter

It gave me many valuable lessons when
I watch this movie at the cinema..

How a coach has an impact on his students:

2. Free Willy

This is movie is WOW!
I watched this movie many years back when I
was 8 or 9 years old. And even till now, the theme
song of this movie hit a cord in me.

And of course the friendship between a
whale and a human.

“Will You Be There” is the song:

3. Brother Bear
I got a confession, cartoons are not
my type BUT brother bear taught me
about kinship and friendship that I even
got the DVD!

“I Will Be There For You”

Alright it gives me great pleasure
looking for these clips for you too =)

Let me know what you think =)

Relax!

Why Did You Choose Nursing?

Good Day Nursing Fellows =)

A quick sharing here..

It was the first tutorial for the
module Professional Issues In Nursing
And Practices.

It was a casual and comfortable tutorial
and what we had to do was to share with
out group mates and of course our lovely
tutor on the following:

1. Why did you choose nursing?
2. What is the response from your family and friends?

Interestingly I am into my fourth year
studying nursing [NYP 3 years + 1st year in NUS]..

These questions are ALWAYS or should i say
OFTEN asked.

My answer was:

My aunt is a nurse, has been an inspiration,
and 3 years in nyp further reinforce this calling.
Assisting the sick into the path of recovery.

Well, my parents caution me about the “dirty”
stuffs you need to do [cleaning people].

Well, a lecturer in nyp shared with the students
that nobody likes anybody to clean their A**
BUT because they are not fit to do it, you are
in fact doing mercy for them.

Can you imagine yourself dirtying your pants
and you have no energy to clean yourself?

The feeling is !@#$% right?

Anyway back to the topic, some of my other
group mates shared that it was the career prospects,
wanting to help, making a difference in someone’s life etc.

It was a aha! moment for me that,
there is a new generation of nursing in
the incubator now. [Not that I am old!]

To me, the nursing profession is on track to
a greater height!

Kudos!

Take care =)

Diploma VS Degree

Hi Nursing Buddies

It has been 3 weeks since I
started the bachelor’s degree
program with NUS.

Hmm…

What’s the difference between
a diploma and a degree?

At this moment..my reply would be this:

The number of READINGS!

The additional readings that we got to
do at NUS is colossal!

Nevertheless it is a experience of its
kind.

Just a short posting to share my thoughts =)

Take care!
JY Chia
